Searching in the SKC Database

by Jan Matějovič last modified 2010-08-05 14:45

Searching the SKC Database can be performed in three modes in the Web OPAC, you may search in the whole SKC base  or in two separate sub-databases: SKCM  for monographic and special publications and SKCP  for serial publications.

For more information see the Search hints below the search fields and also the Help section.

Browse:

The Browse Search allows you to search the catalogue in alphabetical or numerical order. You can browse forward or backwards through a scrollable list of selected indexes. You can choose one of the indexes:
    Title
    Subject (keywords)
    Authors
    Corporate author
    Publisher
    ISBN / ISMN
    ISSN
    UDC

Basic Search:

The Search function enables you to find records by entering keywords or phrases. You can use "Field to search" pull-down menu to specify the search mode. Available indexes are:
    All Fields
    Title
    Author / Corporate author
    Subject (keywords)
    Publisher
    Place of publication
    Year of publication
    ISBN / ISMN / ISSN
    Document language code
    Country code
    Type of document
    System number

Advanced Search:

Advanced Search lets you search the database by entering keywords. You can use pull-down menus to specify fields and define search mode. The relationship between these three fields is handled by the logical operator AND. It offers the same indexes and additional limitations as Basic Search:
    All Fields
    Title
    Author / Corporate author
    Subject (keywords)
    Publisher
    Place of publication
    Year of publication
    ISBN / ISMN / ISSN
    Document language code
    Country code
    Type of document
    System number

Multi-field Search:

Multi-field search lets you search the database by entering keywords in the fields with pre-defined indexes:
    Author
    Words from title
    Year of publication
    Subject (keywords)
    Publisher

CCL Search:

Common Command Language (CCL) allows you to search for words and headings in several different indexes at once. You will have to specify the code of the word and the heading indexes to be searched. The common abbreviations used in CCL can be found in the Help - CCL Code section or below the search fields in Search hints.

All the search modes (excluding Browse) offer also additional limiting indexes:
    Language code
    Year of publication
Type of document (predefined as Books, Serials, Maps, ...)

Result of the search will display a simple record in standard view or a list of retrieved records which let you choose one or mark more of them for further browsing or downloading.

Entered keywords are shown in bold.

Underlined details are interactive in the standard view and some of them link you also to the:
    Czech National Authority Database
    indexes of the SKC Database
    other records of the database.

There is a Location Code and library name abbreviations as identifiers of the document owner and even call-numbers, if a library provides them.

The label "Local record" links to the record in the local catalogue of the owner.

It s possible to download (or sent to the e-mail) the marked records in a chosen format, or "Add to Basket" where another processing or sorting can be done before the download.
